Potato Sagu

Potato Sagu is a spicy gravy with onions & potatoes, that can be used as a side for poori, rice, chapathi or rava idli.

VJ always talks about one of his relatives who makes this delicious potato sagu and packs it with chapathi as take-out lunch for him. He likes it especially when chapathi and a spoon full of hot potato sagu are layered one on top of another (imagine how soft & juicy chapathi will be from that hot gravy). I still remember the way he made me drool for chapathi/potato sagu combo when he explained how sagu oozes into his mouth when he takes a bite into this heavenly combination :) You should definitely try it whenever you get a chance!

Ingredients
Medium sized potatoes – 4-5 nos
Finely chopped onion - 1.5 nos (big)
Tomatoes - 2 nos (finely chopped)
Slit green chillies - 2 nos
Cilantro - 2 tbsp (finely chopped)
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
Oil - 1 tbsp
Salt - to taste

Method
Pressure cook the potatoes, peel and cut them into small pieces (I mash a potato or two for thicker gravy). Heat oil in a pan. Once oil gets heated, splutter the mustard seeds & fry cumin seeds until fragrant. Then, add green chillies & onion and saute till the onions turns transparent. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until the raw smell of the tomatoes are gone. Add the potatoes, salt, and 3/4 cup of water (add more or less water for the consistency that you like). Add turmeric powder, chilli powder and cook them until all of the spices & salt are infused into potatoes.

Finally, garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

  1. I'm sorry, but what does "nos" mean? Is that the number of chilis or onions or whatever to use?
